National Youth Agency: Exploring volunteering in a recession

1 min read
The National Youth Agency has been working with research specialist Dubit Research on a project exploring volunteering and the recession.

The project set out to discover if young people are more likely to volunteer now than before the recession and what their motivations for volunteering are. It also looked at whether there are sufficient opportunities to volunteer and what young people's experiences over the last 12 months have been — what have been the barriers and the enablers.

The research also explored if there is a greater awareness of accreditation and the role of volunteering as part of a pathway to employment and the wider expectations young people have of their volunteering and what organisations provide.

The research used an innovative online focus group approach with pre-recruited participants accessing the room using a username and password. Participants are provided with an online character that they can personalise by changing the appearance.
