Such a scheme would secure and affirm professional status for youth workers, the National Youth Agency believes, and the agency's position as the guardians of workforce standards and quality in the broad youth sector.
A pilot phase will start this spring with professionally qualified youth workers in one of the English regions invited to join the scheme. If this proves successful it will be expanded England-wide and extended to include pre-professional staff and possibly management staff.
Diane Evans, national programme manager for workforce issues at the agency, said: "As well as establishing the agency's position as the guardians of workforce standards and quality in the broad youth sector this registration scheme also fulfils our mission to improve practice, using registration as a tool to drive up the currency of professional qualifications and promote continuing professional development."
