Myplace will make little difference

The government's Myplace fund will fail to deliver a meaningful improvement in youth facilities across England, according to a leading youth work membership body.

Writing in Youth Work Now, Ruth Fogg, chair of the National Association of Youth and Community Education Officers (NAYCEO), said: "Although the Myplace fund will no doubt provide a limited number of high-specification youth facilities, it will do little to upgrade the ageing youth facilities that predominate towns and villages."

NAYCEO, which represents mid-level youth workers and managers, believes the £201.7m allocated to the programme should have been given to youth capital funds and youth opportunity funds to be distributed locally by young people.

"By channelling the money allocated to Myplace through the youth opportunity fund and youth capital fund, real investment could have been made to local youth facilities with young people at the heart of decision making and delivery."
