He decides to try cracking a joke about Aston Villa's late, late winner against Birmingham yesterday. It is terrible to see such a promising career cut short by one simple misjudgement about the boss's sense of humour. I see him later, ashen faced and distraught. I'm almost tempted to go over and reassure him, but no. His lesson, like my pain, cannot be avoided.
