My Week - Dressing gown good, dinner jacket bad

1 min read
Sunday: Wake up feeling great. The sun is shining. The garden beckons. And, for the first time in several days, I feel relaxed. Why? Because a piano recital I helped organise, and about which I'd been desperately anxious, went off splendidly on Saturday.

The day begins with me clad in a dressing gown watching the re-run of Match of the Day, which I'd missed the previous night. Manchester United and Chelsea beaten by Fulham and Spurs! Later Liverpool beat Aston Villa 5-0. Feel sorry for Villa. But a wonderful set of results.

Monday: Preparing my speech for Nacro's annual youth justice conference at the beginning of April. Decide not to use Powerpoint, so no urgency. But I work out what I'm going to say about early intervention, this year's theme.

Everything depends on the nature of the early intervention. Socially inclusive support for families and children in need: good; fly-posting the identities of child offenders: bad. And, oh yes, contrary to what some ministers maintain, we can't accurately predict which young children will become adult villains.
