My Life: Jacob Marriott, 17, London

As a teenager, I felt I couldn't achieve anything. I doubted myself and my ability to live up to my family's expectations. My self-confidence was non-existent and I would find myself thinking the worst-case scenario for everyday decisions. This had a negative effect on my mental health.

In 2009, I took part in the Teens and Toddlers programme through my school. The organisation pairs young people from disadvantaged areas, as mentors and role models, to children in nurseries who need extra support. This experience helped change the way I saw myself and others.

The charity asked me to join its corporate mentoring programme. I jumped at the chance. Teens and Toddlers assigned me a mentor from the business world who I met every two weeks for life and careers advice.

As a result, I decided to join a group of other Teens and Toddlers graduates who created the organisation's Youth-Led Consultancy Board. We want to run community projects to help other young people. We're looking for funding to deliver healthy relationship training sessions in London schools.
