My Life: Laura-May Nardella, 17, London

A lot of people close to me have struggled with alcohol and drug addiction. So two years ago when my friend mentioned the London Youth Involvement Project, I decided to join. It's run by Mentor, a drug and alcohol abuse prevention charity, and involves about 10 young people from London.

Many young people are misinformed about drugs and alcohol, so I was excited when we decided as a team that we wanted to change the way drugs education is delivered.

People treat drugs and alcohol like taboo subjects. Teenagers need to know more about different types of drugs, the legal repercussions of taking them and the effects they can have on your body. But mostly, drug education needs to focus on building confidence in young people so that when they're inevitably faced with difficult social situations, they can deal with them.

We decided to gather evidence to back our campaign. Over the past two years, we have collected views from students, parents and professionals through focus groups, surveys and interviews. We have run two massive conferences in London showing the inadequacies in drug education and recommending what should be done.
