My Life - Bethany Ebdon, 17, York

1 min read Youth Work Participation
I am chair of York Youth Council and this is my third year of being a youth councillor.

I joined the youth council after I was voted chair of my school council when I was in year 10 and a teacher who thought it would suit me suggested that I join. Three years later, I am now in my second year of college and I have come a long way.

During my time at York Youth Council, we have made a lot of difference to York, and it has made a lot of difference to me - I have become much more confident in myself and a very good public speaker.

We have made lots of progress in our main campaign, which is around transport. We have finally managed to create the Yozone for 16- to 19-year-olds, which is really important to me because it means young people do not have to pay ridiculous amounts of money to travel short distances.

We have created an award to help high schools offer greater support in helping those with mental health issues as we believe that this is very important to young people.

I have also received the Lord Mayor of York Young Volunteers Award for the work I have done for York Youth Council and other bits of volunteering such as the steering group I am part of, which creates meetings for all youth councils across Yorkshire and Humber.
