Minister's Question Time: Margaret Hodge, Minister for children, young people and families

1 min read
What is your view of the apparent contradiction between the education standards agenda and the growing role of schools in meeting the care needs of children, and what can be done to reconcile it? Has any work been done, for instance, to measure the impact of the testing regime in schools on the mental health of children?

Children will not perform at their best if they are not healthy and happy.

High achievement depends on how well they are coping with their everyday lives. Schools will not achieve high standards if we do not support all children to achieve their best. There is no contradiction between standards and care: no contradiction between excellence and inclusion. This understanding underpins our programme for children and young people. It's why we have brought together children's social care services with education services. It's the reason for our developing children's trusts, children's centres and extended schools.

A positive school experience is very important. Aiming high and achieving one's best does not have to lead to stress. Indeed it can increase a child's self-esteem and emotional wellbeing.
