Minister's Question Time: Margaret Hodge, Minister for children, young people and families

1 min read
Can you give any more detail on how children will be involved in selecting the commissioner? Will younger children be involved as well as teenagers, and children from towns and rural areas as well as cities? Sent in by Keisha and Gennifer, both aged 10, Margate, Kent

- First of all, thank you Keisha and Gennifer. I am delighted that you have taken such a keen interest in the subject and hope that children up and down the country will feel the same enthusiasm and want to get involved.

We haven't yet worked out in detail how children and young people will be involved in the selection, but we want to do something similar to the way Northern Ireland recruited their children's commissioner. More information is available on his web site at www.niccy.org/background/appoint.aspx

I think it is very important that younger children should have a say in who is appointed. After all, the commissioner will represent all children and young people and we will provide training for those who do participate so that they can give their best and play a full role in the proceedings.
