Methodists hopeful that youth work plan ushers in a new era

The Methodist Association of Youth Clubs (MAYC) is waiting to learn whether its youth work plan for the next five years will be given the green light.

The Methodist Conference, which oversees Methodist youth work in England, will decide on the participation strategy's future today (9 July).

If it gives the go-ahead, the strategy will shape youth work for over-16s in Methodist organisations for the next five years. The plan sets out how Methodist youth clubs will develop and is asking the church for £4m to spend on helping young people to volunteer.

Mike Seaton, general secretary at the MAYC, said the organisation's previous youth work strategy was not as successful as he had hoped. "We were missing large groups of young people because we relied on them having the ability to give up several weekends to volunteer," he said. "Many young people weren't able to do that."
