Mentors to target girls in Manchester

1 min read Youth Work
A mentoring scheme in south Manchester will be launched next week in an attempt to empower teenage girls and steer them away from crime.

The Reclaim project will match 30 girls aged 12 to 14 with 15 adult mentors from the local community. The young women will also take part in a four-day conference to produce a manifesto on how to improve the local area and their lives. The project follows a similar scheme for local boys launched last October.

Although government statistics show girls are increasingly involved in crime, the issue is often overlooked, according to project organiser Urbis.

Ruth Ibegbuna, director of learning and community at Urbis, said: "I have seen first-hand how street culture can adversely affect the girls of this area. We spend a lot of time and resources supporting young men, but we can't achieve successful communities without ensuring girls are supported in the same way."
