Jo Stephenson reports on a project that teaches young people in North Tyneside the skills to get a job; a mentoring scheme for young women; a centre that provides a haven for teenagers in south Bristol; and a youth theatre performance.

PHOENIX DETACHED YOUTH PROJECTS

Name of project: Phoenix detached youth project

Goal: To work with young people to develop their ideas and support their life choices and education

Funding: Nearly £100,000 a year from funders including the Tudor Trust, Northern Rock Foundation and The Henry Smith Charity

"One of the greatest things you can do is get a young person into work," says Mike Burgess, manager of the Phoenix detached youth project.

The project, which has been going for four years, operates in five housing estates in North Tyneside. The area is dogged by long-term unemployment, but Phoenix is helping young people break that cycle.

"Some of our areas are among the top one or two per cent of the most deprived parts of England," Burgess says. "The cornerstone of our work is detached youth work leading to other things."
