Youth Work: Young lay down the law in Moss Side

1 min read Youth Work
Teenage boys in Manchester's Moss Side area are drawing up a manifesto for residents to live by.

The project is part of a four-day conference called Reclaim, which is aimed at raising the self-esteem of 13-year-olds living in the area. The conference will culminate in 45 boys being paired up with mentors to create an eight-point manifesto for Moss Side residents to live by, in a bid to improve the area.

When the manifesto is complete 6,000 copies will be printed and laminated, with young people challenged with persuading schools, taxi companies and residents to display them.

Ruth Ibegbuna, head of learning at the conference's organisers Urbis, said it was up to the boys to decide what was in the manifesto. "In a focus group one young person said 'no spitting on the street'," she said. "I asked if that was really the most important issue to them and they asked me if I had ever been to Moss Side."
