MENTORING: Lewisham gets help with care leavers

The mentors will help the council ensure care leavers receive the same support that parents give their own children.

The project builds the self-esteem of young people aged 16 to 21 when they leave care. The mentors will be matched with individual young people and spend time with them socially.

Councillor Mike Holder, cabinet member for social care and health at Lewisham Borough Council, said: "A mentor can make all the difference in helping them in life. It can also be rewarding for the mentors."

Lewisham's Leaving Care Mentoring Scheme was one of the first mentoring projects of its kind to be awarded approved provider status by The Prince's Trust in 2002.
