Peer support could help care leavers

1 min read Social Care
Peer mentoring is being considered as a way to help care leavers who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), according to the minister for the third sector.

Speaking at a Rainer and National Youth Agency conference last week, Phil Hope said care leavers were some of the nation's most vulnerable young people, with three out of 10 being NEETs.

He added one in five care leavers end up homeless after leaving the care system: "It is at that transition when they leave care that issues can happen and life can go off track."

Hope said care leavers were one of the target groups for the Cabinet Office: "Our aim is to shift these statistics. Can we find a mentoring, peer support system for young people in this position? They need that as they haven't got family support."
