The Office for National Statistics last week published a survey highlighting the scale of mental disorders among young people in local authority care.
It showed that 37 per cent had conduct disorders, 12 per cent had emotional disorders such as depression and seven per cent were rated as hyperactive.
The figures compare with previous statistics showing that one in 10 of all young people have a mental disorder.
In light of the report, Wilson said: "There are people working in residential care who don't have enough training - this should be a priority. Children and young people are in care because various tragedies have occurred in their lives."
