Mental health: Hounslow councillors appeal to health secretary overlocal cuts

A west London council is using special powers to call on health secretary Patricia Hewitt to block plans to slash funding for its child mental health services by a quarter.

The London Borough of Hounslow is taking action following plans by itslocal primary care and mental health trusts to cut 300,000 fromthe child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) budget.

Under the Health and Social Care Act 2001, councils' overview andscrutiny health committees have the power to refer local NHS bodies tothe health secretary as a last resort following attempts to thrash outproblems locally.

Councillor Andrew Morgan-Watts, chair of Hounslow's children and youngpeople scrutiny panel, said the primary care trust had been forced tomake the cuts as a result of top-slicing its budget, a move he hoped theletter sent to the health secretary would reverse.
