Health News: Learning disabilities - Counties team up on mental health

Three English counties are teaming up to aid the development of mental health services for children.

The partnership between services in Kent, Sussex and Surrey will resultin the crea-tion of a regional commissioning network that will developminimum standards for mental health services for children with learningdisabilities.

Children with learning disabilities are at a high risk of having mentalhealth problems, yet concerns are mounting that poor definitions oflearning disability, and of what constitutes a service for learningdisabled children with mental health problems, has led to poor progressin developing services.

Simon Laker, commissioning manager for the Surrey Child and AdolescentMental Health Partnership, told Children Now the "absence of a definingelement" had led to "a lot of concern" among commissioners about how toprovide services.
