Contact matters, run by Children's charity NCH, was unveiled by Rosie Winterton, parliamentary undersecretary to the Lord Chancellor's department, on 13 March. It is the first in a series of centres that are due to be set up across the UK.
Supervised contact is needed in a wide range of situations where there are serious concerns about the safety or emotional development of a child, such as parental conflict, substance misuse or a history of domestic violence.
Each child and family will be assessed and offered a tailored support package for six months. The intention is that the service will enable parents to deal with any issues that are making contact difficult and encourage them to manage contact themselves.
