What is a MIAM?
A MIAM (mediation information and assessment meeting) is a meeting between a person who is considering making a court application in a private family matter and a mediator. The purpose of the meeting is to decide whether mediation could be used to resolve a matter, instead of court proceedings. Courts are required to know that mediation has been considered before they are able to proceed with a private family law application.
At a MIAM, a mediator will explain what options there are for resolving a dispute; what mediation is and how it works; the benefits of mediation and other methods of resolving disputes; the costs of using mediation; and whether a person is eligible for legal aid.
