Family mediation: Legal Q&A

What is mediation?

Mediation is the process by which families can negotiate with the help of a neutral third party. Mediation is recommended when parents find it hard to agree on making suitable arrangements for children after a family breakdown, as it can provide a cheaper, quicker and less stressful way of resolving disputes. A mediator can help the parties to reach their own agreements amicably, while trying to improve communication between them.

Is mediation compulsory?

From April 2014, anyone applying to the courts for assistance in resolving disputes about children or finances will be required to attend a Mediation Information Assessment Meeting (MIAM).
