Analysis: Family Contact - Is it time to toughen contact law?

A Government green paper promises to shake up the family justice system by streamlining legal procedures, cutting the number of cases that go to court and introducing new legislation to help judges. Jo Stephenson asks if it goes far enough.

Mark Rudd has been fighting for contact with his two daughters for five years. He has been to court 48 times and his case has come before three different judges.

As time goes by, the 42-year-old builder from Hertfordshire knows it will become harder to build any sort of relationship with his girls, aged five and 12.

Last week, the Government unveiled proposals for a shake-up of the family justice system in its green paper Parental Separation: Children's Needs and Parents' Responsibilities. The document includes plans to reduce lengthy legal battles fought by separating couples and the number of cases that come to court by introducing mediation at the earliest opportunity.
