The Children and Adoption Act 2006 received royal assent last week.Ministers must now decide a timetable for the legislation'simplementation.
The Act will allow the courts to get tough on parents who break contactarrangements. Judges will be able to force parents to do communityservice if they break the agreement. Ordering parents to attendparenting classes is another option now available to judges.
The law will enable the Children and Family Court Advisory and SupportService (Cafcass) to be more proactive and ensure contact ordered by thecourts is taking place.
The Act will affect practice in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
