Media: Video games bill calls for age limit

The Labour MP for Leicester East, Keith Vaz, is putting forward the video games bill. Vaz's bill would remove a clause of the Video Recordings Act 1984, which exempts games from the age classifications that apply to films.

The rules would apply to games featuring criminal behaviour, illegal drugs, violent behaviour, horrific behaviour, or sex.

Vaz has frequently called for closer regulation following the murder of Stefan Pakeerah, a 14-year-old from Leicester. Stefan's mother argued that the murder copied scenes from a video game, Manhunt.

The bill will be introduced as a private members' bill. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has commissioned research on links between violent games and behaviour.
