Al Aynsley-Green, who took up his post last week, hit out at the media during a YoungMinds' conference on mental health services for young people in London.
"There is an astonishing feeding frenzy on young people in the media at the moment," he told the conference. "There is a serious danger of stigmatising and demonising young people, which can cause anger, alienation and frustration."
The commissioner also urged adults to set a better example for young people, claiming that bullying is "endemic" in the adult world, notably among fighting footballers. He also rounded on advertisers and the "commercialisation" of childhood.
Aynsley-Green officially took up his post as children's commissioner on 1 July, stepping down as national clinical director for children and chair of the Department of Health's children's taskforce. He has also relinquished his post as Nuffield professor of child health at Great Ormond Street Hospital and a role at the Institute of Child Health.
