Me & My Youth Worker: 'It's nice to get away from the boys'

1 min read
Rochelle Morgan, 16, Lewisham, and Muhebo Ahmed, youth worker at The Girls House.

How long have you been working together?

Muhebo "I first met Rochelle last October when we set up the first Girls House on Lewisham High Street. The project is for young women only and runs for between eight and 10 weeks before it moves to a different part of Lewisham. Rochelle just came along to the sessions."

Rochelle "They handed out leaflets about the project at school and thought I might as well go along. It was somewhere to go to keep me off the streets after school. I just wanted something to keep me occupied."

What types of activities are on offer?

Muhebo "We offer a range of courses, sessions and workshops for young women. It's a completely walk-in service. We also offer young people confidential one-to-one advice if they want help about any particular problems. With the GCSE exams approaching, we're setting up study support groups as well. The sessions have gone so well that we're now trying to organise a trip to Madagascar."
