Looked-after Children: Service offers respite breaks and emergency placements in Spain

1 min read
Children in care could find themselves enjoying a respite break in Spain after the launch of a new respite and emergency service.

European Respite has been founded by care-leavers and experienced care workers.

Co-founder Hayley Evans, who was fostered as a child, said: "It has been designed to offer looked-after children a more positive experience of respite care. It takes what for many young people has been one of the most depressing and painful aspects of being looked after and transforms it into an enjoyable and rewarding experience."

Fellow founder Jon Stokes was a foster carer before setting up Elevation, a private children's home in Bristol. He admits that social services staff under pressure to reduce budgets may laugh at sending children to Spain but says the cost is comparable to out-of-authority placements.
