Longvernal Nursery School

1 min read Early Years
What is it? Longvernal is keeping children active as part of its commitment to Healthy Early Years, Bath council's scheme to promote healthy eating and exercise for under-fives.

How? Everything is focused on learning through play. Longvernal owner Jenny Lewis says the nursery aims to provide 20-minute bursts of energetic play. To reach their daily target, children also have a warm-up before playing a variety of different exercise-led games. A sports equipment bag was provided by the council as part of the scheme. It contains balls, hoops and mats, which the children play with in the nursery's outdoor space.

Why? Lewis says she can see great benefits for the children. "It provides them with a fun alternative to the computer or television. And it's also very inclusive," she says. "We have adapted active play so children with disabilities can take part too." The nursery hopes its efforts will eventually be rewarded with an Active Play Award from the council.
