Local Network Fund: Poverty Lessons

The Local Network Fund was set up three years ago to help tackle poverty and disadvantage among children and young people. But is it working?

The Local Network Fund for Children and Young People is part of the Government's programme to tackle child poverty. However, few funding applications are being made under the economic deprivation theme. This is just one of the findings of a Department for Education and Skills-commissioned evaluation, which has a major focus on what children and young people think of the fund and their own situation.

One possibility is that people don't like to think of themselves as poor.

In fact, finding out what young people think about their own poverty is not straightforward. But the issue is often addressed in a round-about manner, with the children saying that they were usually unable to use facilities because of the cost.
