Code of practice

Section 3 of the Code of Practice for social care workers requires social workers to "promote the independence of service users" at the same time as keeping them safe.

This can be a tricky balancing act for those working with children and young people but is crucial to achieve, says Claire Hobson, a social worker in the duty team at Sheffield City Council's children and young people's services.

"As a social worker you're involved in making life-changing decisions," she says. "Some children are so vulnerable you have to make decisions on their behalf but their wishes and feelings should always be an important part of the process."
