Lincolnshire Montessori, Children's House, Lincolnshire

What is so special about this nursery? Taking a lot of inspiration from the kindergartens of Scandinavia, the nursery was designed and built after consultation with the children on what they wanted in the setting.

How did they involve the children? A range of consultation tools were used. Children were given cameras and told to take photos of what they liked best and those photos were passed on to the architect. Lots of pictures of views through the window out into the garden translated into low windows, rooflights and plenty of outdoor space.

What is the best part of the nursery? The skycone. This is a large tubular construction, which rises up through the middle of the building and has a Perspex roof. Children can retreat into the tube and relax.

Why is it purpose built? The idea of the "children's house" is to ensure that children really feel they own the space. It also shows that the providers value childhood and children's opinions.
