If a potential Tory government is to stem the rising tide of youth unemployment or effectively prepare young people for work, it needs to considerably increase its ambitions. Offering vocational training in a separate school system suggests work-based skills are only relevant to a section of the student population and could stigmatise students who take this route, ignoring the fact that employers and universities are crying out for new recruits with work experience and transferable skills.
Young people leaving education today face the most challenging economic conditions we have seen for three-quarters of a century. We need to ensure our education system provides them with the tools required to tackle an ever more competitive environment.
