Letters: Teachers promote equality

1 min read Letters
Principle 4 of the General Teaching Council's (GTC) new Code of Conduct and Practice sets out a teacher's duty to treat all pupils, parents and colleagues fairly and with respect, whatever their background, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief.

Contrary to the letter from Schools Out, the code affirms a teacher's role in promoting equality (CYP Now, 16-22 July).

Principle 4 actually states that registered teachers "demonstrate respect for diversity and promote equality". The council has a strong track record on promoting equality and supporting schools to meet their duties under the Race Relations Amendment Act.

Furthermore, the Equality and Human Rights Commission supports the GTC's code of conduct.

Keith Bartley, chief executive, General Teaching Council for England
