We are extremely concerned to read that social workers are not attending vital child protection training as a result of high caseloads (CYP Now, 25 June-1 July). Social workers appearing in front of our committees to face charges of misconduct often cite a lack of specialist training or unmanageable caseloads in mitigation. Providing training and ensuring social workers are not overloaded should therefore be top priorities for employers.
Our Code of Practice for Employers of Social Care Workers says that employers must provide opportunities for their staff to receive training and take steps to address anything that prevents this. This code is set to become mandatory in the future. We urge employers to take heed of it now.
