By all means, let's weed out waste, but let's not reinvent the wheel or create unnecessary duplication or divisions.
Established and successful programmes could be built upon and incorporated into the new National Citizen Service to further extend and increase young people's participation in their local communities. After all, effective youth work is good youth work, whoever delivers it.

Custodial rates drop in Brent
In your article on sentencing, Brent Council was singled out as having one of the highest custodial rates for young offenders in the country (CYP Now, 31 August-6 September). While the figures printed were a true reflection of that year, more up-to-date figures show that custodial rates in Brent have dropped rapidly to 3.85 per cent in 2009/10.
