It may sometimes require a different approach, because children often respond better when a range of creative approaches are used. These include sand trays, paints, modelling and materials, plus puppets to enable them to express themselves. Counselling in primary school can also differ in that other family members may be involved.
An independent evaluation of the school counselling project run by the Thamesmead Family Service Unit, which works with four primary and two secondary schools in the boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich, concluded there was much work being done that would constitute best practice.
