I wanted to respond to Howard Williamson's piece about the Woodcraft Folk (CYP Now, 29 January-4 February 2009).
I'd like to recommend to your readers an excellent book by Mary Davis entitled Fashioning a New World, A History of the Woodcraft Folk, which was published in 2000 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Woodcraft Folk. She documents the beginnings of the Woodcraft Folk as a youth organisation with principles of internationalism.
Far from losing its way, the organisation has in fact kept to its principles and the rest of the country is hopefully now catching up with growing concerns about climate change. The Woodcraft has always been an environmentalist organisation.
