Letters: Palliative care funding

1 min read
Your article about the new national strategy for children's palliative care in England raised some important points, not least the need for greater and more sustainable resources (Children Now, 23-29 May).

The statement, however, that adult hospices "have almost all their costscovered by statutory funding" was wide of the mark. In fact, adulthospices in England receive on average just 33 per cent of expenditurefrom the Government, with some receiving far less.

Adult and children's hospices alike are not asking the Government tomeet all their costs, but they have never received full and fair paymentfor their services.

The current funding situation is not sustainable. We welcome theindependent review of children's palliative care and the Government'sforthcoming End of Life Care Strategy for adults, as a crucial startingpoint.

We are committed to working with Government, other health and socialcare providers, and alongside the Association of Children's Hospices, towards a shared goal of better end of life care for all.
