Letters: Go beyond citizen schemes

1 min read
Rhetoric around strengthening communities is strong in all three of the main parties' manifestos.

We welcome this focus and the move to potentially deliver more through local communities but call on all parties to be clearer on their costing and details of the proposals put forward. While their proposals offer significant opportunities for voluntary and community organisations, they are not going to be easily realised without financial support.

As well as the economic challenges posed by limited education, employment and training opportunities, young people are facing social challenges every day. Yet solutions for dealing with these challenges appear to be on the periphery of proposals in the party manifestos and this is disappointing.

Citizenship schemes are not the only solution to addressing the wide range of social challenges faced by our young people. Young people need to be protected in the design and delivery of all public services, statutory and non-statutory alike.
