Voluntary service criticises parties

Youth Work
A leading voluntary sector youth organisation has criticised the three main political parties for failing to do enough to tackle youth unemployment in their election manifestos.

The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services said that with levels of youth unemployment remaining stubbornly high, the parties need to offer more radical solutions to the problem.

"It is encouraging that Labour retains its commitment to the Future Jobs Fund, but we would have welcomed proposals to extend the duration of this programme further for young people who are unemployed," said Faiza Chaudary, director of policy and communications. "The commitments from all parties to increase apprenticeships and open further education places are positive developments but without stronger safeguards within the jobs marketplace new cycles of worklessness for young people will develop."
