Letters: Do-it-yourself training

1 min read
Our experience as a voluntary sector youth provider backs Paul Vaughan's points. When recruiting we have found a skills gap, so after getting funding we recruited and invested in a team of trainee youth workers.

When we could not find any Level 3 training aside from vocational courses run by the local authority that had a nine-month waiting list, we decided to run our own. We are now delivering a Level 3 youth worker course to nine trainees, and their enthusiasm is immense.

The only potential barriers are, as Vaughan highlights, problems with numeracy and literacy. So to support this we are running study support sessions alongside the programme. A high number of our staff have a range of learning needs, but they are a very creative and dedicated team.
