Although the need for early intervention is already recognised atgovernmental level - with guidance issued by the Department forEducation and Skills that education should start in primary schoolsbefore drinking patterns become established - there is little focus onprevention initiatives and the younger age group in this report.
Indeed, because prevention is better than cure, Mentor UK launched theAlcohol Misuse Prevention Awards last year.
This awards scheme recognises the best projects and activitiesinfluencing children's attitudes, skills and behaviour, so that whenthey are older they can avoid the damage that the misuse of alcohol cancause.
However, with the majority of drugs funding from the Government beingspent on criminal justice interventions and treatment rather thanprevention, many of the projects which were shortlisted in our awardsscheme will struggle to survive.
