2010 Drug Strategy Consultation Paper

1 min read Health
What's it about? The coalition government plans to publish a new drug strategy in December, the vision for which is set out by the Home Office in this consultation paper.

The consultation gives people the opportunity to put forward their opinions on the proposed policy, thus influencing its development. The overall scope of the strategy is illegal drugs, but it will include the prevention of all types of substance misuse.

What are the main points?

The consultation focuses on four key themes: prevention of drug use; supporting recovery to break the drug addiction cycle; criminal justice and strengthening enforcement; and rebalancing treatment to support drug-free outcomes. The government is proposing a holistic approach by tackling drug issues in conjunction with alcohol abuse, child protection, mental health, housing and employment. The Department for Education will take the lead on early prevention work with young people.

Who can have their say?

Drug workers, charities, drug enforcement partners, voluntary and community sector organisations, and members of the public. Comments about how parents can be supported to prevent drug abuse in young people, and how communities can work together to alleviate drug misuse are welcomed.

When is the deadline?

Responses are accepted online, by email or post, and must be received by 30 September.
