In fact, it was an automated number plate reader and within seconds the details of my car were passed to a central computer system that would have alerted the operators in the van if my car had been used in a crime anywhere in the UK, was stolen, or whether it had a valid tax disc.
If any of these things applied, I would have been pulled over by the waiting police motorcyclist within a few hundred yards.
The national TV licensing computer also has an enormous range of information about all of us, as do the National Insurance and Inland Revenue databases.
