Letter: Parenting support

1 min read
We read with interest about Home Secretary John Reid's package of measures designed to help families with "problem children" (Children Now, 22-28 November).

As the biggest independent provider of parent support in the country, wesend a warning that these proposals can only succeed if they are seen assupport packages and not stigmatised punitive measures.

We know that many parents have been asking for help for a long time, yetit is ironic that they only get help when their children play truant, offend or are deemed anti-social. This is when early intervention andlong-term prevention are crucial and we would welcome anything thatwould make parenting support more available.

The Government has also announced that 1,000 practitioners will workwith families who are struggling. These practitioners must haveappropriate skills and be fully supported in this crucial role.
