Letter: More child benefit is needed

1 min read
The Budget contains good news for families and we welcome the emphasis on making work pay.

We are pleased to see an increase in the child element of the child taxcredit and an increase in child benefit. But we know poverty hits harderin larger families, and we support the campaign to increase childbenefit for every child. We would also like to see more financial helptowards caring for a disabled child.

The proposed working tax credit run-on aims to reduce the problems ofoverpayments. We hope it will be effective as the impact of overpaymentscan be severe.

The proposed partnership between local employers and Jobcentre Plus tohelp long-term unemployed and economically inactive people into work isinteresting. This was proposed in Lisa Harker's report into childpoverty, and we'd hope the fruits of any such partnership might beextended to cover a New Deal for Parents.
