Letter: Hiring supply teachers

It is disheartening to read about the latest Ofsted research as it shows that the vast majority of schools and teachers are ignoring the Quality Mark scheme for supply agencies and local education authorities as ultimately, they are the ones who will face the consequences (Children Now, 28 June-4 July). But who is to blame?

The Quality Mark represents a basic standard for education employmentagencies and local education authorities.

Amazingly, only three local education authorities have the Quality Mark- surely it is high time the Government made it compulsory?

It is also clear that schools need to be educated about the importanceof the Quality Mark and selecting supply teachers from the best possiblesources. Supply teachers make an important contribution but we need toensure that they are recruited and managed well.

John Dunn, director of Select Education and education chair at theRecruitment and Employment Confederation.
