LETTER: The challenge of autism

It was with dismay, but not surprise, that I read a five-year old who suffers from severe autism had been excluded from school (Children Now, 8-14 November).

What does it say about the quality of continual professionaldevelopment, to say nothing of advocacy on behalf of children withdisabilities, when a local education authority's inclusion andachievement manager cites the reason for the girl's exclusion as,"appropriate in the circumstances and not based upon her disability, buther behaviour".

Does he know what autism is? Does he know anything of the symptoms? Doeshe know that behaviour issues in children with autistic spectrumdisorders are often provoked by inappropriate management by those caringfor them?

Everything I have ever learned about children with special educationalneeds is never enough to know how best to care for a child with autism.Each child is a unique work in progress and deserves at the very leastto be "managed" by professionals who know what they are doing.
