Letter: Children as individuals

It was with some dismay that I read the Safeguarding Squad article (Children Now, 28 June-4 July). The reason is that the author liberally used the term "it" when referring to a young child of concern. I am sure that I am not alone in finding this an outdated and inappropriate label. I would go as far as suggesting that referring to children as "it" devalues children and may even contribute to continuing discriminatory and abusive practices.

It is now nearly 20 years since Butler-Sloss criticised children asbeing portrayed as "objects of concern" rather than individuals in theirown right. We would not refer to adults as "it" so may I suggest that weall take issue with this oppressive and distasteful practice.
